Cord Blood Program

Who Donates Cord Blood?

  • Consenting mothers are screened for donation before the birth of their child. A blood draw from the expectant mother's arm is also required after she has been admitted to the hospital.
  • As with any blood donation, there is a careful screening process. For cord blood, this includes a review of the mother's medical history and risk behaviors.
  • Most healthy women are qualified to donate, however, cord blood is currently only being collected locally at Swedish Medical Center, located on First Hill and in Ballard, Overlake Hospital Medical Center, Evergreen Hospital, Madigan Army Medical Center and at the University of Washington Medical Center.
  • The opportunity to donate will expand as more funding resources are developed. Identifying funding sources to cover the cost of processing, testing and storing each cord blood sample is a significant challenge for Puget Sound Blood Center and other nonprofit blood centers that are establishing cord blood banks.
  • Factors that may prevent you from donating include: carrying more than one baby, a history of cancer or a blood disease in either of the baby's parents or any of the baby's siblings, a pregnancy resulting from sperm or egg donation (unless from an AATB accredited bank), and recent travel to a malaria-risk area.

Please contact us if you have any questions about your eligibility, by email at cordblood@psbc.org or by phone at 206-292-1896 or 1-800-DONATE1 ext. 1896.
