Ghana Hospital Benefits from the Blood Center

Last year, as part of the Blood Center’s commitment to sharing best practices, Dr. Meghan Delaney, a Transfusion Physician and the Blood Centers’ Assistant Medical Director, visited Obuasi, Ghana to learn and share first-hand transfusion practices. As part of her time in Obuasi, Dr. Delaney delivered a lecture to all medical staff at AGA Hospital and presented them with medical equipment comprised of medical books, laboratory equipment (centrifuge), thermometers, stationery, pedometers with small radio and headphones among others. Dr. Carl Eugene Augustt on behalf of AGA thanked Dr. Delaney for her support adding that doctors, nurses, laboratory and other allied professionals who participated in the lecture gained new ideas in transfusion medicine.

Following Dr. Delaney’s summer visit, this past November, the Blood Center sent additional medical laboratory equipment valued at over $10,000. Mr. Daniel Somuah, Senior Medical Technologist at Edwin Cade Hospital in Ghana, who had an eight-week training program with the Blood Center, presented the items on its behalf. Dr. Augustt stated that the equipment will further enable the hospital to process blood for safe transfusions to patients.

As part of her visit, Dr. Meghan Delaney toured the donor room at
Korle Bu Hospital and Public Health Laboratory in Accra, Ghana.
