Jill M. Johnsen Laboratory

The Johnsen laboratory studies the role of natural variation of clotting factors, blood groups, and blood cell traits in disease, and the differences that result from having different blood groups in terms of natural antibodies and altered susceptibility to infection.

Our work has significance in blood clotting disorders that are inherited, such as von Willebrand disease, hemophilia, and inherited platelet disorders, and acquired, including pregnancy-related vascular diseases, heart attack, stroke, and embolisms (clots in blood vessels).

Areas of Study

  • Modifiers of coagulation (particularly von Willebrand Factor)
  • Genetic differences in blood vessels
  • Familial platelet disorders
